A number of resolutions to be adopted by the Assembly of the World Jewish Congress were under consideration today at a session of the Assembly’s political committee which was addressed by Dr. Goldmann, WJC president.
One resolution deplored the fact that no appropriate compensation has been accorded to victims of Nazi persecution by Austria. The resolution called upon the Austrian Government and Parliament as well as on the West German Federal Republic to recognize their joint responsibility.
Another re solution called for the unification of Rumanian Jewish families and urged the Rumanian Government to resume its policy of allowing the emigration of Jews wishing to join relatives abroad.
The political committee is also considering a resolution expressing concern over the future of Soviet Jewry and asking the Soviet Government to grant cultural freedom to the Jews in the Soviet Union.
Other resolutions call upon the United Nations and all governments to take all suitable steps to impress upon the Egyptian authorities the urgent need for a speedy settlement of compensation claims by Egyptian Jews for damages inflicted upon them through confiscation of their property.
The Assembly will also be presented with a resolution calling for direct Israel-Arab negotiations for the establishment of peace and cooperation based upon the recognition of the sovereignty and integrity of each state in the Middle East.
The WJC Assembly marked today the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sholom Aleichem and the 25th anniversary of the death of the great Hebrew poet Haim Nachman Bialik. The tributes were delivered by Zalman Shazar, acting chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
