The election of a Jew, in 1807, as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada, will be marked with special ceremonies, next September 7, as part of Canadian Jewry’s celebration of the bicentenary of Jewish life in the Dominion. Announcement of the plans for the September observance were made here today by the Canadian Jewish Congress, which is in charge of the bicentenary celebration.
The Jew, first of his faith to achieve an official position in Canada was Ezekiel Hart, of Three Rivers, Quebec. His community re-elected him to the Legislature for a second term, in 1808. A plaque will be unveiled at Three Rivers commemorating the event. Participating in the ceremony will be Maurice Duplessis, Premier of the Province of Quebec.
In connection with the bicentenary, the Canadian Jewish Congress also announced today the publication of the fifth issue of “Canadian Jewish Archives. “This issue contains official documents dealing with Jewish life in the Dominion, covering the period 1763 to 1809.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
