Jews in Brazil Must Vote on Rosh Hashanah in Municipal Elections

Brazil’s compulsory voting law applies to Brazilian Jews regardless of Jewish holidays and they must vote in the October 4 municipal elections, a date that coincides with the second day of Rosh Hashanah.

A regional electoral tribunal ruled to that effect today, holding there was no legal basis for an exemption for Jewish voters. Under Brazil law, those staying away from the polls are subject to fines.
