There are between 30,000 and 40,000 Jews in West Germany, but the actual count of Jews registered as members of the Jewish community currently is 21,449, according to the revised edition of a handbook, “The Jews in Germany,” published here today. In the last four years, the handbook shows, the number of Jews registered as such has increased by 5,865.
The increased number of registered Jews, according to Heinz Gantlier, editor of the work, is due to the fact that Jews immigrating to or re-entering Germany have registered, rather than to natural increase among the German-Jewish population.
During the four-year period, 1955-59, the figures show, 239 Jewish children were born in Germany, 1,466 Jews died, and 1,885 emigrated. In the same period, approximately 6,000 Jews immigrated to Germany from abroad, while about 3,000 came to the German communities from displaced persons camps that have been dissolved.
