A study center where Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish scholars might engage in a continuing “dialogue” on theological issues was proposed here by Dr. Jaroslav Pelikan of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. The Lutheran theologian made his proposal at a meeting of regional directors of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
“Christianity needs confrontation with Judaism.” Dr. Pelikan said. “By this I do not mean only the profound moral truth that the treatment of Jews is one of the tests of Christianity, and a test in which the Christian performance has been poor. I mean also the profound religious and theological truth that whenever Christian thought loses touch with Judaism, it loses touch with a part of itself. Whenever in Christian history Christians have neglected their ties with the ancient people of God, they have been impoverished in both faith and understanding.”
