Dr. Joseph Kaplan, chairman of the United States National Committee for the International Geophysical Year–the man who was chiefly responsible for the United States participation in the world-wide study of geophysics by 68 nations–was honored here last night by the members of the Phi Sigma Delta Fraternity at a banquet celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Fraternity.
A check for $1,000 was presented to Dr. Kaplan to be used for establishing in Dr. Kaplan’s name, a scholarship at the University of California. The scholarship will be given to a science student in the university, where Dr. Kaplan is Professor of Physics. The Phi Sigma Delta fraternity was founded at Columbia University in New York on November 10, 1909 and now has 47 chapters in the leading colleges and universities of America, including the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois.
