Jordan Asks Italy to Prevent Selling U.S. Surplus Arms to Israel

The Government of Jordan has formally asked the Italian Foreign Ministry for guarantees that arms surpluses left in Italy by the United States occupation army after World War II will not be sold to Israel, it was reported today.

The Agenzia Diplomatica news agency said that the request was accompanied by a warning that Jordanian-Italian relations might otherwise be “compromised.”

The news agency also reported that the Italian Foreign Ministry, while not replying with a precise commitment, let it be known that the matter of surplus arms would be examined and that Jordan’s request would be taken “into consideration.”
