An agreement by which the Friedrich Krupp Company will pay to former Jewish concentration camp inmates who were forced laborers during the Nasi regime in various Krupp factories an initial sum of 6,000,000 deutschemarks ($1,428,000), which may be increased to 10,000,000 deutschemarks ($2,380,000) was reached between the Conference of Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and the Krupp Company, Mr. Jacob Blaustein, senior vice-president of the Claims Conference announced today.
The final agreement was worked out following discussions in New York and Essen which were conducted in a friendly atmosphere and resulted in a mutually acceptable solution to this difficult problem. Mr. Blaustein stated: “The agreement is intended to serve the best interests of Jewish claimants and represents an important step in the effort to alleviate some of the distress of surviving victims of Nazi persecution. It follows the pattern established in the 1957 agreement between the Claims Conference and the I. G. Farben Company.”
It is envisaged that approximately 5,000 deutschemarks per person will be paid to eligible former Jewish concentration camp inmates who toiled in the Krupp factories. Should the amount of 6,000,000 deutschemarks prove inadequate to provide payments on this basis to all eligible claimants, the Krupp Company will provide additional funds up to 4,000,000 deutschemarks, bringing the total payment by the Krupp Company to a maximum of 10,000,000 deutschemarks.
The agreement is the outcome of negotiations conducted over a number of years for the purpose of providing compensation to former Jewish laborers in the Krupp factories without compelling them to engage in long and costly litigation. The Claims Conference has set up a trust, the Compensation Treuhand G. m. B. H., Staufenstrasse 29A, Frank-furt-am-Main, to carry out the terms of the agreements with the I. G. Farben and Krupp companies. Application forms can be obtained by applying to that office.
