The Joint Public Relations Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress and B’nai B’rith has protested to the Toronto Globe and Mail the appearance of an advertisement announcing the establishment of an “exclusive Jewish golf and country club.”
The advertisement, which was substantial in size, appeared in the December 19 issue. It listed particulars of facilities, membership fees and other information and included a born number for reply.
Professor J. Finkelman, chairman of the central region of the public relations committee, and S. M. Harris, chairman, said in a statement to the daily that “The Canadian Jewish Congress deprecates the advertisement.”
“It is and always has been our position that the manifestation of such a restrictive policy is in bad taste,” the officials declared. “We believe that it is offensive to the public at large to flaunt such an intention which is in violation of tenets acceptable to all Canadians sincerely concerned as they are with a civic sense of unity.”
Declaring that “we find such announcements objectionable no matter what the source,” the officials added the hope “that eventually barriers between groups in Canada will vanish. This type of advertisement tends to delay that day rather than hasten it.”
