Officials of Tnuva, the Histadrut agricultural marketing cooperative, called on the Government today to discontinue further imports of dairy products in order to eliminate unnecessary surpluses, in milk, butter and cheese. The demand was made at the annual meeting here of the marketing body, which dealt with the problems of agricultural production and farm surpluses following a peak production year in 1959 in which Tnuva handled farm products totaling 277, 000, 000 Israel pounds ($155, 120, 000).
Tnuva also demanded that the Government decrease farm acreage under tomato and Carrot cultivation because of a glut of these products on the local market.
Production in 1959 showed a 31 percent increase in dairy products over the previous year; an increase of 11 percent in eggs, 10 percent in vegetables and poultry, 44 percent in fruit and 37 percent in fish production.
