The Israel Rabbinical Council has rejected a Government proposal to restrict the post of Chief Rabbi to candidates under 70 years of age.
The rabbinical group met at the request of Rabbi Jacob M. Toledano, Israel Minister of Religions, who explained the reasons for the proposed amendments to existing regulations governing elections to the post. After a lengthy discussion, the rabbis decided to oppose the age limitation amendment contending that its promulgation without the Israel rabbinate’s approval would be invalid.
The objections made it virtually certain the elections for a successor to the late Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog, originally scheduled for February, will be postponed until after Passover.
