Two University of Arisona students, Jack Weidner, 18, and Donald Kopec, 23, were expelled from the school, fined $50 and sentenced to five days in jail after they were caught marking up a kosher market here. City police said that the two students left the city at the end of their jail sentences. City officials said they would continue to deal severely with offenders.
In Scottsdale, two small homemade bombs were thrown at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gold but did no damage. Later the Golds received a phone call asking: “How does it feel to be the only Jew in the neighborhood?”
The Tucson Ministerial Association declared that it was gravely concerned about the “recent outbursts of vandalism in our community” which were centered on “acts and symbols which are identified with religious bigotry and intolerance.” The statement warned the community to remember “the tragic history of such outbursts should they develop into a hate and revenge crusade.”
