“Better and tighter ties and understanding” between the Israel Government and the Zionist movement are essential for both, Mrs. Rose Halprin, acting chairman of the Jewish Agency executive in New York, declared at a press conference here today.
“The Zionist movement’s functions for Israel,” Mrs. Halprin stated, “are not yet complete, and the Zionist movement remains the only body and address on which Israel may count, and to which Israel can apply for any service which would be readily dealt with. “
Declaring that “relations between Israel and the Zionist movement are not as they should be.” Mrs. Halprin said “Whoever thinks, or claims, that there is another address which Israel can use–the term ‘world Jewry’ being an abstract–is very mistaken. Though the Zionist movement need not be perpetuated, there is still great work undone, like preparing a large reserve of immigration for Israel from outside Israel. This is being done by educating the Jewish youth, a project now under way. “
Speaking of the possibilities of emigration to Israel from Western countries, Mrs. Halprin stated that, as far as America and Britain are concerned, “it is essential first to provide those prospective immigrants with conditions that would enable them to remain in Israel, which is what they desire. The main obstacle is housing, and efforts should be directed toward solution of this problem.”
