While there is need for “continued vigilance” against the possibility of resurgent anti-Semitism, “there is no ground for attaching too great importance to the incidents that have occurred in this country. ” Namie Philips, chairman of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, declared here today.

The police authorities are investigating the incidents, Mr. Philips told the monthly meeting of the Board, “and all matters affecting law and order must be left in their hands. ” Gustav Sarom, secretary of the Board, characterized the recent swastika-smearing incidents as “trivial. “

Arthur Suzman, chairman of the Board’s public relations committee, reported that public authorities have been notified about the distribution of an anti-Semitic book in this country. The book was written, in part, Mr. Suzman said, by Erik Holm, a South African who was an announcer for the Nazi radio during World War II. Holm is now reportedly employed by the South African Government.
