Detroit’s Allied Jewish Campaign–the community’s major fund-raising effort on behalf of leading overseas, national and local Jewish causes–has already received contributions toward the 1960 drive totaling $1, 867, 890, from a group of “big givers, ” who has-exceeded their 1959 contributions by 15 percent.
Including advance gifts from the Women’s Division, the campaign, which will not start its drive officially until March 21, has already recorded contributions aggregating $2, 100, 000.
The suspicious start, announced at the traditional, annual meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. William Sucher, has led campaign leaders to the belief that this year’s drive will exceed last year’s total of $5, 000, 000–and may attain the record 1957 total of $6, 000, 000.
Max M. Fisher, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, and C. William Sucher announced the largest gift, totaling $160, 000, marking a $10, 000 increase over their contribution last year. It is the largest contribution ever given to the Allied Jewish Campaign here.
