The Jewish Colonization Association voted today to devote 15, 000, 000 Israeli pounds ($8, 400, 000) for the completion and consolidation of underdeveloped settlements in Israel. The decision was made at the conclusion of a meeting of the Association’s administrative council held here this weekend.
The development scheme in Israel will be implemented by the Association jointly with the Jewish Agency, and will embrace 20 to 25 settlements with a population of nearly 2, 000 farm families in Israel.
Two settlements, Kfar Maimon and Tel Lachish, under construction now, are to be completed this year, according to the plans. Financial help will also be given by the Association to the agricultural faculty of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the offices in Israel for children’s and youth immigration, the Weizmann Institute of Science at Rehovot, and the Mikveh Israel Agricultural School.
The Association voted, too to support the work of vocational training conducted by ORT, and to create a network of loan banks whose purpose will be to improve the position of the Jewish population in Israel, including facilities for integration of newly arrived immigrants. The Association will also step up its help to Jewish organizations in France aiding the large numbers of immigrants from North Africa flowing into France.
The Council re-elected Sir Henry d’Avigdor Goldsmid as president, and Rene Mayer and Max Gottschalk as vice-presidents.
