The first sapling of the Israel Rogosin Forest was planted today near Ruhama in the northern Negev, in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Rogosin, Finance Minister Levi Eshkol and other officials of the Government and the Jewish National Fund. The ceremony marked Mr. Rogosin’s 73rd birthday.
A total of 300,000 trees–mainly eucalyptus and pine–will be planted in the forest over a five-year period. They will eventually serve as a source of pulp for Israel’s paper, rayon and plastics industries and will supply the new Rogosin rayon plant in Ashdod. The Rogosin Forest is expected to yield about four tons of pulp per acre after ten years. Israel now imports about 60,000 tons of pulp annually.
