A plea that “all governments are admonished to guarantee to all Jewish people the right to live peacefully, in moral and political equality, among other people, ” was voiced here at a solemn commemoration of the 16th anniversary of the Argentine Caves massacre. In that massacre, under Nazi Jurisdiction in Italy, 335 Romans, including Jews, were executed in reprisal for the deaths here of 32 German members of Hitler’s SS.
The admonition for guaranteeing freedom to all Jews was voiced, in the context of a condemnation of last winter’s anti-Semitic excesses, by Leonardo Azzarita, president of the Italian Association of Families of Martyrs. A Hebrew memorial service was conducted at the Caves by Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff. Among the participants in the ceremonies were Rome’s Mayor Umberto Cioccetti and representatives of the Federal Senate, Army and State Government.
