Lawrence A. Wien, philanthropic leader, was elected 17th president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, at a meeting of the organization’s board of trustees last night. Mrs. Randolph Guggenheimer and Samuel Lemberg were elected as vice-presidents of the Federation. Gustave L. Levy, who retired last night after three years as president, was elected as an associate chairman of the board of trustees and an honorary trustee-at-large.
Mr. Wien has had wide experience in the activities of the Federation. Last year he served as president-elect, and before that was chairman of the 1958-59 fund-raising campaign and associate chairman in 1957-58. He is a trustee of Brandeis University and chairman of its National Development Council. He initiated and sponsors the Wien International Scholarship Program at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Under the Wien Scholarship Program 100 students from 50 foreign countries are granted a year of study at Brandeis. Each student receives a scholarship of $41,000 for travel, tuition, room and board.
