The American Mercury magazine, which has been accused of consistently carrying anti-Semitic material in recent years, has virtually disappeared from newsstands throughout Philadelphia, it was learned today. Previously, newsdealers and distributors in the New York area had dropped the periodical after a virtual ban was reported by printers against it.

Samuel Gentile, president of the Philadelphia Newspaper and Magazine Chauffeurs and Handlers Union, local 628, said that distributors “have not been handling the Mercury for nearly six months, ” He added that the only copies coming to Philadelphia would be those coming directly to subscribers or distributors by mail from the publisher. He also disclosed that one dealer, who received copies by mail, refused to sell it after he had been informed of its contents.
