Three of the 39 fraternities at the University of Pennsylvania were under orders today to end racial and religious discrimination in membership practices required by their national charters.
Gene D. Gisburne, University vice-president for student affairs, said none of the other 36 fraternities had such admission restrictions. Under the University order, the national fraternities–Sigma Chi, Alpha Tau Omega and Sigma Nu–must either eliminate the discriminatory clauses from their constitutions or give the University of Pennsylvania chapters exemptions from these clauses.
The University trustees said failure to use either alternative would mean that the local chapters could not continue their affiliation with the parent organizations.
