A total of 73 Jewish federations and welfare funds reported an average national increase of 3.6 percent from the same contributors as of June 17, in the closing stages of their campaigns, Irving Kane of Cleveland, president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, disclosed today. The central community campaigns raise the bulk of all American Jewish philanthropic funds for local, national and overseas Jewish needs, with the United Jewish Appeal the largest single beneficiary.
The report noted that these results were accomplished despite the fact that, “for the first time in several years, there were no emergency headlines for Israel’s needs. ” It pointed out that “instead, there was a more mature approach to Israel’s long-range needs and to the enormous backlog of unmet needs. This included shifting some 60, 000 immigrants from ma’abarot to permanent housing and the consolidation of agricultural settlements.”
Ten of the 73 cities reporting, exceeded or equalled their final 1959 totals. These were: Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto, Dallas, Louisville, Phoenix, Tucson, Canton and San Jose. Two more communities, Philadelphia and Newark, estimated their final results will surpass their 1959 tallies.
Total funds raised by these 73 cities amounted to $57,482,169 as compared with $55, 476, 141 raised last year.
