The Republic of Cyprus, which is stated to receive independence from British rule this month, is expected to open a consulate in Israel as well as in the Arab countries, it was learned here today. Israel has maintained a consulate in Nicosia for a number of years.

Cypriot sources stated that the new Government does not intend to discriminate in its relations with any Middle East country, in spite of the fact that various Arab capitals have been pressuring the Cypriot Government not to establish ties with Israel.

Cyprus is planning to open embassies in only four capitals — Athens, Ankara, London and Washington. In other countries where Cyprus has interests, only consulates will be opened.
