A contract for the sale to Israel of more than $1,250,000 worth of busses and motors was announced today by the British Leyland Motors. Included in the transaction were 165 Worldmaster busses and 150 new Leyland power-plus diesel engines which incorporate a new combustion chamber increasing horsepower and cutting fuel consumption.
D. G. Stokes of Leyland said that during the past four years “Israel has bought more then 4,500,000 pounds sterling ($12,600,000) worth of Leyland vehicles,” Cooperatives in Israel are using more than 1,200 Leyland busses which have met schedules with great success and which have been of considerable help in the solution of Israel’s domestic transport problems, he reported.
Most of the 165 new busses will be allocated to Israel’s three largest bus cooperatives–90 to the Egged bus cooperative, 45 to the Dan cooperative and 15 to the Hame-kasher cooperative. Ten of the remaining vehicles will go to the Ministry of Defense and others will go to bus firms serving small towns particularly in northern Israel. The diesel engines will be installed in American-made busses in the Egged fleet.
