Israel-Ethiopian cooperation will be expanded in three fields–government administration, technical projects and agricultural and industrial development–it was learned here today following the return Saturday night of Agriculture Minister Moshe Dayan from a visit to the African state during which he conferred with Emperor Haile Selassie and Government leaders. Mr. Dayan returned unexpectedly to confer with Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion before proceeding to Lagos tonight to represent Israel at Nigerian independence celebrations next weekend.
The number of Israel experts and technicians in Ethiopia, will soon exceed the number of those sent to any other country, it was reported. Israeli experts will shortly be dispatched, it was learned, to work in various Ethiopian ministries. Israel will also extend aid to the Addis Ababa Government in a number of special projects such as water drilling, irrigation, medical services and technical education.
Joint-Israel-Ethiopian agricultural and industrial enterprises will include the establishment of a special Ethiopian-Israel Development Company already approved by the Emperor, which would bring under cultivation tens of thousands of acres of fallow lands and would establish new settlements in the development areas.
In connection with the expansion of existing cooperation between the two countries in Red Sea fishing ventures, two Israeli fishing vessels left Haifa this weekend for the 12,000-mile trip around Africa to the Ethiopian port of Massawa where they will be based. The ships, which are barred from making the trip through the Suez Canal by the United Arab Republic blockade, will market the fish via the Israeli port of Eilat.
