“Strong pressures” have been put on the Austrian Government to improve the provisions of a measure to be introduced in the Vienna Parliament, dealing with compensation to Austrian victims of Nazi persecutions, Barnett Janner, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, declared here today.

Mr. Janner made that statement at today’s meeting of the Board, referring especially to the hope that the Austrian compensation move may be extended to Austrian Jews living outside Austria. “We should not be too optimistic,” Mr. Janner stated, “but there is hope that certain improvements to the proposed legislation may emerge, and that the West German Government may supplement the compensation to be paid by Austria.”
