The West Berlin Jewish community began today a week-long series of events commemorating the Crystal Night pogroms on November 9, 1938 when synagogues and Jewish homes and shops throughout Germany were looted and burned. At ceremonies at the Community House, Senator Joachim Lipschitz and Heinz Galinski, chairman of the Jewish community, recalled the events of 1938.
A literary and musical program marking Crystal Night has been arranged for tomorrow by the West Berlin Wilmersdorf office for Art of the Senate. On November 16, a memorial tablet for the victims of 1933-1945 will be unveiled at West Berlin’s Dorfaue near Teltower Damm. The following day, an exhibition by Israeli painters will open at the Jewish Community House here and will run until December 15. About 150 works by modern Israeli painters will be on show.
