Jewish communities throughout the country will start observance this Friday of the 17th annual Jewish Book Month, according to an announcement today by the Jewish Welfare Board, sponsor of the Month.
The events, to be conducted under the leadership of Jewish community centers, local Jewish book councils, and special committees will include exhibits of current books and rare manuscripts, literary contests, book Sabbath programs, children’s contests, dramatizations, radio and television programs, and book fairs.
During Jewish Book Month, special programs will be devoted to honoring the anniversaries of noted Jewish literary figures, including the contemporary Yiddish poet, H. Leivick; Moses Ibn Ezra, Spanish Hebrew poet, who was born; 900 years ago; the late Dr. Theodor Herzl, who was born 100 years ago; and the late Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, theologian and philosopher, who died in 1935.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
