A French history professor was dismissed from his post at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland today after an inquiry commission reported on his activities which had been described as anti-Semitic. Professor Antoine Favre, who left France after the Second World War in order to escape charges of pro-German and anti-Jewish activities, was later accused in Switzerland of fostering racial hatred.
The commission, appointed by the Swiss Federal Council, reported that his activities “were not directed against Jews generally but against some of them, those guilty of extremism, materialistic or Marxist opinion.” The commission also found that anti-Semitic articles published during the German occupation in France in a magazine directed by Professor Favre “were not his personal responsibility.” However, on the basis of the findings, the professor was dismissed from his post at the French Institute at the University of Fribourg, where he taught the history of civilization.
