More than 700 prominent leaders jammed the main ballroom of the Sheraton Plaza Hotel here for a formal Inaugural Dinner celebration of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston. The CJP is the result of the merger of the nation’s oldest welfare federation, the Associated Jewish Philanthropies, with the Combined Jewish Appeal.
Elected president of the new central community coordinating and fund-raising arm for vital Jewish needs at home, overseas, nationally and in Israel, was Louis P. Smith, who served as Combined Jewish Appeal president for four years following two years of service as campaign chairman. He has been active in communal affairs for more than two decades.
President Kennedy, in a special message to Benjamin Ulin and Lewis H.Weinstein, dinner co-chairmen, hailed the merger as a “milestone in the philanthropic history of this area which gives promise of even greater achievement in the future. ” Simon J. Helman, retiring president of the Associated Jewish Philanthropies, and Smith, were presented silver kiddush cups by a group of friends, in recognition of their community service records.
