The Regents’ proposal for across-the-board “scholarships” as a means of aiding religiously controlled colleges was denounced today as an “evasion” of constitutional provisions for church-state separation by four Jewish bodies.

In a telegram to the Governor and the leadership of both houses of the Legislature, the groups called for defeat of the proposal and demanded public hearings. “Let each religious group accept responsibility for the religious education of its own youth, ” they declared.

The messages were sent in the names of the American Jewish Congress, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
