The American delegation to the United Nations today intensified its efforts to secure the elimination of any possible debate on the Arab-Israel problem during the current session of the United Nations General Assembly. Such a debate is foreseen when the Assembly will discuss the report of the Director of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees which is on the agenda.
Arab delegations, it is understood, have indicated to the American delegation that they might be willing to forego a debate providing certain conditions are complied with. The nature of the conditions which they advanced was not revealed. However, members of the American delegation have conveyed the conditions to the Israeli delegation and it seems that the Israelis found them unacceptable.
American delegation circles told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that they will continue their behind-the-scene efforts. At the sane time they expressed pessimism on the outcome and indicated that a debate on the Palestine refugees issue should be expected unless the attitude of both the Arab delegations and the Israelis are changed.
