The House Committee on the Judiciary, under the chairmanship of Congressman Emanuel Celler of New York, rejected today a private bill that would have given permanent residence in the United States to Andrija Artukovic,. Minister of the Interior in the Nazi puppet government of Croatia during World War II.
“As in past sessions, ” said Mr, Celler, “the committee has turned down the bill.” Artukovic, who lives now at Surfside, Calif., has been accused by the Yugoslav Government of the murder of 1, 200 Jews, Serbians, Croatians and others.
At the same time, it was reported here that a hearing has been granted to Laszlo Agh, a Hungarian reserve officer and former commander of a Hungarian labor camp, who had been ordered deported. Agh, who lives in New Jersey, has appealed the deportation order. The date of the hearing has not been announced. Agh’s name appears in the list-of persons accused or suspected of crimes against humanity compiled by the World Jewish Congress.
