A collection of more than 1,000 ancient lamps from archaeological sites in the Mediterranean area, has been presented to the Hebrew University by Mrs. Miriam S. Schloessinger, widow of Dr. Max Schloessinger, orientalist and former deputy chancellor of the university.
The gift, which was accepted by Dr. Binyamin Mazar, former president of the university, was made along with a grant of $214,000 for the establishment of a chair in Islamic studies in memory of Dr. Schloessinger. Included in the collection is a Jewish lamp dating back to the Fourth Century which has no known counterpart anywhere. Made of bronze, the lamp has a menorah decoration as a handle and bears other Hebrew symbols.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
