Dr. Isaac I. Schwarzbart, world Zionist leader who for many years was an official of the World Jewish Congress, died this morning suddenly at his home here. Death of the 72-year-old Jewish leader was caused by a heart attack.
Born in Poland, he had served there as a member of the Polish Parliament until the Nazis occupied Warsaw. He was a member of the Polish Government in Exile from 1940 to 1945 and came to the United States in 1946. He had been a member of the Zionist Actions Committee since 1933 and founder of the World Union of General Zionists. He served as first president of the World Union.
Active in various Jewish organizations, Dr. Schwarzbart was also a member of the board of directors of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. His last act yesterday was the sending of a message of greetings to the convention of the newly formed Liberal Party in Israel which opened last night in Tel Aviv merging the General Zionists with the Progressive Party into one group. In this message he pointed out that he had advocated such a merger many years ago.
