The Bonn Prosecution Office announced today that an investigation against Dr. Hans Globke, State Secretary to Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, had been closed. A six-month investigation had failed to verify charges by Dr. Max Merten; Nazi wartime administrator of Salonika, Greece, against Dr. Globke, the announcement said.
Merten had accused Globke of having had dealings with Adolf Eichmann, the former Gestapo colonel now on trial in Jerusalem and of participation in the extermination of European Jewry. One of Dr. Merten’s charges was that Dr. Globke had rejected a plan prepared by Eichmann to allow 10,000 Jewish women and children to go from Greece to Palestine. A suit has been filed by Dr. Globke against Merten, who is now living in West Germany, for libel and perjury.
