George Lincoln Rockwell was free on bond today while his nine Nazi “troopers” remained in jail on charges of disturbing the peace but with instructions from their leader to end a five-day hunger strike.
Rockwell was able to raise bond money only for himself and went immediately to a nearby restaurant for his first meal since he and his “hate bus” entourage members were arrested Wednesday while picketing the movie “Exodus.” The ten Nazis went on a hunger strike to protest their arrest.
Rockwell sent a telegram to “Lieutenant John Patler, American Nazi Party, New Orleans Prison,” in which he informed his subordinate that a judge had promised trial by Friday or Monday as well as immediate arraignment. The wire included an instruction to “start eating.”
