Louis Rasminsky, 53, took office today as Governor of the Bank of Canada, the highest government post ever held by a Jew in Canada. The position is comparable to the chairmanship of the United States Federal Reserve Board.
Mr. Rasminsky, an authority on international finance, had been a deputy governor of the bank for six and a half years. His seven-year term of office as governor dates from today. When he was named a deputy governor nearly seven years ago, many persons had expected him to be named governor and it was widely believed in Ottawa that he was passed over because he was Jewish.
Born in Montreal of parents who immigrated from Poland, Mr. Rasminsky was educated in Toronto public schools, the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics. He is married to the former Lyla Rotenberg of Toronto. The couple has a son, Michael 24, a medical student at Harvard University, and a daughter, Lola, 17.
