Fifty Moroccan Jews were arrested in northeast Morocco yesterday on the charge of attempting to leave the country illegally, it was reported here from Rabat by The New York Times.
The report said the police intercepted a truck carrying a group of Jewish families near the port of Nador and which was headed for the town of Melilla in Spanish Morocco. Moroccan authorities said the Jews were carrying false passports. An official announcement said the 50 Jews were taken to Oujda, where they will be brought to trial.
