Lawrence A. Wien, president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, who is also a member of the board of trustees of Brandeis University, today purchased the Empire State Building for $65, 000, 000–reportedly the highest price ever paid for a single building.
Mr. Wien, who owns between 30 and 40 other large buildings across the country, is an attorney and patron of the ballet. He bought the 102-story Empire State Building, highest structure in the world, from a corporation headed by Colonel Henry Crown, a Chicago Jewish industrialist. The corporation paid $51, 500, 000 for the building when it bought the property in 1951.
