El-Yam, Ltd., Israel’s second largest shipping firm, has placed an order for the construction in West Germany of two 30,000-ton bulk cargo vessels, to be completed in 1963, it was announced here today by Raphael Recanati, president of the steamship line.
The two new freighters, which will be built by Deutsche Werft A.G., of Hamburg, will bring the line’s total tonnage to the 200,000 ton-mark, and are part of a general expansion program of the Israeli merchant marine, which is expected to reach the 1,000,000-ton mark by 1963.
The bulk transports which will have a speed of 15-and-one-half knots, will carry a crew of 40 in fully air conditioned quarters which will feature permanent swimming pools for the crew. Next month, the shipping line will put into service the Har Rimon, one of two fast refrigerator ships now being completed in West Germany. The other refrigerator ship will be ready for service later this year.
