Joseph Smouha, prominent British-Jewish philanthropist, died here at the age of 83. Two months ago he was awarded some 3,000,000 pounds sterling ($8,400,000) compensation for property in Alexandria, Egypt, confiscated by the Nasser regime. The property was reportedly worth more than 12,000,000 pounds sterling ($34,000,000).

Mr. Smouha, who was a textile industrialist in England, settled in Alexandria in 1923 where he turned 700 acres of water and marshland into “Smouha City.” Much of the property was donated by Mr. Smouha to schools, hospitals and other public institutions before, the Nasser regime confiscated the entire tract.
