The opening of an office in New York by the Jewish Publication Society, which has its headquarters here, was announced today by Sol Satinsky, president. The announcement said that the JPS has now more than 11,000 members all over the world, of whom approximately 2, 500 live in the New York area.
Established in 1888 as a non-profit organization for the purpose of publishing and disseminating books of Jewish interest, the JPS has published more than 500 titles with a distribution in excess of 5,000,000 volumes. Its outstanding contribution has been the translation and publication, in 1917, of The Holy Scripture according to the Masoretic text, which represents the first translation of the Bible into the English language under sponsorship of a Jewish community. This Bible is used by Jews wherever English is read, with a distribution of 900,000 volumes.
Other monumental works published by the JPS include Graetz’ History of the Jews in six volumes and Ginzberg’s Legends of the Jews in seven volumes. “These books plus many others in the fields of Jewish history, religion and literature have helped to strengthen and preserve the Jewish heritage during the past generations,” Mr. Satinsky emphasized.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
