The Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel faces a deficit of 4,000,000 pounds ($2,240,000), members of the top-level Hadassah delegation declared here on the eve of their return to New York. The delegation, comprising Mrs. Hose Halprin, Mrs. Rebecca Shulman and Charlotte Jacobson, spent two weeks in Israel during which time they conferred with Finance Minister Levi Eshkol and other Cabinet Ministers, as well as with local Hadassah leaders.
The deficit, it was learned during the talks, was due to rising costs in Israel, the smaller purchasing power of the dollar and overall salary increases. In talks with Mr. Eshkol, the Hadassah leaders stressed the fact that, while the rate of exchange granted Hadassah since 1954 had been frozen at 1,800 Israel pounds per dollar, costs had increased by 40 percent.
The delegation said that Hadassah would meet its obligation but would set suitable dates and priorities in light of the overall budget position. This year, Hadassah sent nearly 13,000,000 pounds ($7,280,000) to Israel for all projects, including nearly 4,000,000 pounds ($2,240,000) for the Hadassah Medical Organization.
