Egyptian Jews and foreign Jews in Egypt, whose properties have been “sequestrated” under the recent confiscation orders issued by Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser, are forbidden to leave Egypt “until certain formalities are completed,” according to Cairo press reports received here today.
Details on the new Nasser program, directed against several hundred Jews in Egypt, show that not only bank accounts were seized by the government, but safe deposit boxes were sealed. The victims are allowed to live in their homes as “guardians” of the homes and furniture. They must assume full responsibility for the effects in their homes and must pay full rent for living in their own homes.
Victims will be paid monthly allowances out of their bank accounts “proportional to their needs.” They are forbidden to discharge servants, being ordered to beware against worsening the unemployment situation.
