Israel Cohen, Author and Noted Zionist, Dies in London; Was 82

Israel Cohen, veteran Zionist, Journalist and author, died here today at the age of 82. A former secretary of the World Zionist Organization, he played an important part in the development of the Zionist movement since the beginning of this century.

Born in Manchester, Mr. Cohen served on the staff of the London Tribune from 1906 to 1908. He was secretary of the British Zionist Federation in 1909-1910 and then served with the English department of the World Zionist Organization in Cologne and Berlin from 1910 until he was interned by the Germans in 1914. After serving as WZO director of publicity, he was named general secretary in 1922 and held that post until 1929. He had been a member of the Board of Deputies of British Jews since 1931.

Among his works were “Jewish Life in Modern Times,” “The Journal of A Jewish Traveler,” “History of the Jews in Vilna.” “Contemporary Jewry,” “A Short History of Zionism” and “The Rebirth of Israel.”
