“Israel is just as much in need of world Jewry as world Jewry is in need of Israel,” Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress, declared here prior to his departure for Israel. He spoke at a gathering sponsored by the Central Council of Jews in Germany; The meeting, which was held in the North Rhine- Westphalia Parliament building, was attended by Federal, state and municipal officials, church dignitaries, members of the Israel Mission and leaders of the Jewish community.
Dr. Goldmann, who addressed the meeting on “The Jews in the World and the State of Israel, ” said that without the Jews in the Diaspora and their spiritual and material support, Israel cannot endure and without Israel, there can be no meaning for a creative world Jewry.
Due to its relationship with world Jewry, Israel is far more than a small state in the Middle East, Dr; Goldmann said. World Jewry, in turn, needs Israel’s support, not only culturally and spiritually, but also because it provides a home of refuge, the world Jewish leader declared.
Dr. Goldmann stressed the decisive importance of West German reparations for economic development in Israel; He also emphasized the “reality of Jews living in Germany today.” It is a matter of personal decision whether a Jew wants to live in Germany or not, he declared. Earlier, Dr. Goldmann addressed a closed meeting of the German Foreign Policy Association in Bonn on “Israel and the Middle East.”
