With a special edition featuring messages of greeting from Federal, State and local leaders in all fields, the Jewish Advocate, leading English-Jewish weekly newspaper, started celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of its founding today. Among the greetings were messages from President Kennedy; Governor John A. Volpe, of Massachusetts; and Mayor John H. Collins, of Boston.
Founded 60 years ago as the Mt. Sinai Monthly, The Jewish Advocate passed later into the hands of the late Jacob de Haas, prominent Zionist leader and former secretary to Dr. Theodor Herzl. In 1916, Mr. de Haas was succeeded as editor and publisher by Alexander Brin, who was joined by his brother, the late Joseph G. Brin, and later by Abraham Weisberg and Joseph G. Weisberg. Dr. Brin is now editor and publisher, while Joseph G. Weisberg is co-publisher.
In his message to Dr. Brin, Mr. Kennedy stated: “Your guiding hand has been felt for the better part of the 60 years of publication. You have served both the American-Jewish community and the larger community well by explaining and interpreting Jewish culture, viewpoint and ideals, and by your work to foster understanding between all groups.”
Joseph G; Weisberg, in addition to being co-publisher of The Jewish Advocate, is also currently president of the American Association of English-Jewish Newspapers.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
