A review of the situation of the Jews in various lands, including their present situation in the Soviet Union, was given here today to a plenary session of the Jewish Agency executive by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization; The session will continue until Friday.
Aryeh Pincus, treasurer of the Agency, presented to the executive the 1962-63 budget, calling for expenditures totaling 270, 000, 000 Israeli pounds ($151, 200, 000); The current budget is 238, 000, 000 ($133, 280, 000), After discussion by the plenary session, the new budget estimates will be submitted to the Jewish Agency, Inc;, in New York.
Dr. Goldmann, in addition to reviewing the political situation, including that of the Russian Jews, also reported on the talks he held last week with German Government leaders and ranking members of Parliament, at Bonn; Those conferences concerned extension of indemnification and restitution eligibility, under German laws, to additional groups of victims of Nazi persecutions not now covered by the West German laws. He told the executive he expects to return to Bonn to continue those discussions.
Another report given the executive by Dr; Goldmann dealt with the activities of the Presidents Conference of Major Jewish Organizations in the United States; He also reported that 60 delegates, representing all American Jewish organizations, are scheduled to attend the world conference on Jewish education to be convened here next August.
Other topics on the plenary’s agenda include a discussion of the increase in immigration into Israel and the absorption of the newcomers; and the strengthening of the Zionist movement in the United States and other countries; The plenary will also discuss the forthcoming meeting to be held here by the Agency-Israel Government Coordinating Board.
