The Ohio State University School of Aviation today announced that it will assist in the training of Israeli agricultural pilots under a recently announced agreement with the State of Israel.
Jack J. Eggspuehler, director of the School of Aviation, said the agreement calls far the training at the university’s airport of three Israeli pilots, who have been selected to serve as instructors in their nation’s agricultural aviation program. The three pilots are receiving instruction in agricultural aircraft performance, in methods of instruction and program planning and in the development of teaching techniques. At the end of their four-week training period here, they will return to Tel Aviv with Mr. Eggspuehler to conduct the first of two annual courses in agriculural aviation.
Faced with a sharp rise in the number of fatalities in agricultural aviation, Israel asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Federal Aviation Agency to assist in analyzing its problems in this field. These agencies found that the primary problem was the lack of experience and training on the part of some pilots and recommended that Israel set up a program similar to that held at Ohio State, Ohio State was called upon to assist the Israeli Government in its agricultural aviation program because of the successful aerial applicator courses conducted annually by the School of Aviation for the past two years.
